Much has already been reported about the new Audi R8. As the first mid-engine sports car in Audi’s production car line up, the Audi R8 is the first of its kind from the German premium can manufacturer, but follows, however, a long history of racing successes featuring todays legendary wins at the Pikes Peak hill climb races, the German Touring Car series (DTM) and the 24 hours of Le Mans among many others. As Audi celebrated the arrival of probably its most important brand ambassador, Audi Middle East invited just under 1,000 customers and VIPs from across the region to join them in an evening that relived some of the most important heartbeats in their long racing history. With each heartbeat in time Audi retold the story of times gone by and technologies that became essential in modern-day driving and are now featured in its latest creation, the Audi R8.

The Audi R8 is more than 70% hand-built at Audi’s Neckarsulm factory and features an aluminum body frame, the quattro permanent four-wheel drive, the Audi magnetic ride damping system, an FSI direct injection mid-engine visible through a glass compartment, the optional R tronic shift-by-wire gearbox as well as LED headlights and daytime running lights. Despite its thoroughbred sport car character and design Audi aimed for the R8 to be a sports car that can be enjoyed every day.

Etihad Airways Pilots were invited to get to know selected Audi models on the road as well as on the racetrack: during a smooth drive from Abu Dhabi to Dubai and within a challenging driving training at the Dubai Autodrome.

Ali and Sons brings the world tour of the renowned Audi Quattro to Abu Dhabi as part of activities celebrating the 25th anniversary of the pioneering technology. Car enthusiasts will have a chance to get a feel for the technology in a series of test drives of the Audi A6 to be hosted by Ali Sons.

From the day of its launch in autumn 1998, the Audi TT took the sports coupé segment by storm and quickly became a cult car.

The first generation Audi TT was an excellent ambassador for Audi’s sportiness in the region and has already become a collector’s item. Replacing an icon is close to impossible, but with the new TT Audi designers have achieved just this.

Abu Dhabi became part of an elite group of cities that was among the first to launch the remarkable new Audi Q7 at an exclusive and high profile event hosted by Ali and Sons, Audi’s exclusive dealer in the capital. The grand unveiling at the Abu Dhabi Beach Rotana Hotel witnessed the gathering of more than 300 invited guests and some of Abu Dhabi’s well-known personalities, who were all eager to discover the unique features of the highly-anticipated vehicle. The evening was themed as a classic Hollywood gala film-premiere with a red carpet, paparazzi, and a more unusual star in the spotlight: the new Audi Q7. Michael Lee, lead drummer of popular rock band Led Zeppelin, was the evening’s much applauded feature performer.

The Audi Q7 marks a superlative new development in the sport utility vehicle (SUV) segment. The Audi Q7 ingeniously combines sportiness and versatility, sophisticated technology and the luxury of a premium-class vehicle. It has a new 4.2-litre V8 engine with FSI petrol direct injection, which develops 257 kW (350 bhp) and achieves a maximum torque of 440 Nm. Power transmission comes from the seamless 6-speed tiptronic.

On the road, the Q7 excels with the driving performance and dynamism of a sports car; off-road it redefines the benchmark in its category. A vehicle that outwardly makes no secret of its qualities and whose technology delivers on its promise – on any road and in all conditions.

The Audi Q7 is naturally equipped as standard with quattro permanent four wheel drive. This drive concept has become firmly established over the past 25 years: more than two million products have left the assembly line with this technology and countless victories have been notched up on the racetrack and in rallies by virtue of this system.
The Audi SUV also comes with the adaptive air suspension as a standard. The combination of air suspension and an electronically controlled damping system represents the perfect synthesis of decidedly sporty handling and supreme ride comfort.

With a length of 5,086 mm and a wheelbase of exactly 3,002 mm (width: 1,983 mm / height 1,737 mm), the Q7 takes the lead in the SUV contest. Its occupants benefit from the comfort of incomparable spaciousness and a new dimension in versatility: no less than 28 seating and loading configurations are possible in the Q7.

Up to seven occupants can be accommodated in three rows of seats. The seats in the second row are individually adjustable for fore/aft movement; in addition to this, passengers can enjoy the largest legroom in this class. Both rear seat rows can be folded flat to provide a load area of 2,035 litres. If used as a 5-seater the Q7 boasts a load capacity of 775 litres – the best in its class!
On board the performance SUV, a number of innovative driver assistance systems, introduced for the first time in standard production, are available. For example the Audi Side Assist with radar technology for lane-changing manoeuvres as an option. The ESP includes numerous new functions such as hill descent assist. A special off-road mode optimises brake performance and traction on loose surfaces. Car/trailer stabilisation reduces the risk of fishtailing by means of targeted brake intervention.

Once more Audi aims to prove its claim “Vorsprung durch Technik” (Advancement through Technology) through a spectacular challenge in the deserts sands of the UAE: to drive up the highest dune in the Northern Emirates – the “Big Red” near Al Nizwa – in a limousine car.

In front of an audience of VIP guests and media, the completely unmodified Audi A6 3.2 saloon with quattro permanent four-wheel drive went up the dune in a straight line smooth and trouble free – an angle of 60 percent. The dune is especially popular for off-roading and with a height of approximately 100 m above sea level is ideal for the stunt. Members of the audience afterwards had the chance to test their own driving skills and take on the challenge themselves. Audi quattro first wrote history in Kaipola/Finland in 1986, where an Audi with quattro drive proved capable of driving up an Olympic ski jump with a gradient of 80 percent.  The quattro system, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary with the Middle East quattro tour, is just one of Audi’s developments which ensures the crucial difference in sportiness, safety and efficiency for its drivers – ‘advantage’ or ‘Vorsprung’. Further in line in a history of ideas follow the Audi Space Frame, multitronic, tiptronic, DSG, FSI and as well as TDI, which in the Audi R10 was the first diesel engine to win the 12 hours of Sebring in March 2006.
